Nitamo: The confusion happens because in western countries
meditation means to think deeply about something, “to meditate on
something.” Most techniques known in the West are methods of focussing the
mind on sound (making or listening to), on a point in the body
the heart, the navel or the third eye, for example or on an image like a
mandala or a spiritual guide.
I define meditation as awareness with no thought
a state of no-mind.
It’s really only when you move beyond the
technique, beyond any doing, however subtle even like simply being
aware of the breath that you can experience meditation.
You can use the mind to go beyond the mind
but many people settle for just a pleasant, soothing state of relaxation,
without realizing that they are still just on the “porch of consciousness.”
